Applying for a Visa to Myanmar

Applying for a Visa to Myanmar

The rise of e-visas has made getting a visa to many countries a lot easier than in the past. One such place which has implemented a quick and easy way to apply for entry is Myanmar (Burma).

Since I plan to visit Myanmar in late December, I applied for an e-visa back in October just in case it would take longer than expected. To be honest, the application process was painless, easy, and extremely quick. I got approved for the e-visa within a couple hours of making the application and paying the fee.

Here is an easy step-by-step guide on applying for an e-visa to Myanmar:

1) The first thing to do is apply for the e-visa through the official government website.

2) Once you are at the website, go to the tab at the top that says “apply visa” and click on tourist visa option. There is also an tourist visa express option, but I am not entirely sure how that is different from the regular tourist visa. If you applying for a business visa, that option can be found under the same tab as well.

3) You will then need to fill out some basic information on your country of origin, length of stay, accommodation, among other types of typical formalities. You will also need to provide a recent photo. While it is possible to probably apply for a visa without booking accommodation, I opted to first book a hotel then complete the application since I did not want to take a chance on being rejected.

Once everything is filled out to the best of your ability, you just need to pay the visa fee, and you can do that with a major credit card. The cost of a tourist visa is $50 while a business visa is $70 (accurate as of December 2019).

The only thing left to do is just wait. I cannot speak for everyone, but I got approved for the visa about two hours after applying. It was extremely quick, and you are sent a PDF of the e-visa that you must print out and bring to immigration at the airport.

If I have to be honest, applying for a Myanmar e-visa was exceedingly easy, took almost no time, and was super quick. Of course, depending on your nationality, it might be a different process with a different set of requirements, but for anyone from the US or Europe, applying for an online e-visa is a quick and easy process.
