Like many churches in Europe, even though the exterior is quite bland, the interior is a complete contrast since it is very richly decorated with paintings and sculptures which creates a very colorful combination.

Although Ljubljana Cathedral does not look particularly old, don’t let its looks deceive you. It is actually very old. Although its interior dates to the 18th century, its history actually goes back much earlier to the late 13th century. However, very little of the church from this period exists anymore since the cathedral has been rebuilt and renovated several times in its long history.

When visiting the cathedral, it is recommended to avoid using flash on the camera and definitely be sure to look up at the intricately-detailed painted ceiling, which dates from the 19th century.

2) Franciscan Church of the Annunciation

The Franciscan Church of the Annunciation is probably the most well-known and recognizable churches in Ljubljana because of its unique reddish/pink facade which makes it stand out from the other buildings. The church is located in the old town of Ljubljana in Preseren Square, which is right next to the Triple Bridge, which links the old town with the modern city, so it is very easy to find.

Like Ljubljana Cathedral, the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation is very richly decorated with interior decorations that date mostly from the 18th century that should not be missed by any visitor.

3) Urusuline Church of the Holy Trinity

The Ursuline Church of the Holy Trinity is another church that is located in the old town of Ljubljana that faces Congress Square. If a visitor makes their way up to Ljubljana Castle, it is very easy to identify this church from the summit along with the Franciscan Church of the Annunciation.

Even though its exterior is relatively unique, the interior is just as beautiful although it is not as heavily decorated as some of the other churches in Ljubljana. However, the high altar of the Ursuline Church of the Holy Trinity is definitely worth seeing because of its intricate details and use of African marble.

4) Sts. Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church

Although a majority of the churches in Slovenia are Roman Catholic, Sts. Cyril and Methodius Orthodox Church is a church belonging to the Serbian Orthodox Church. The church is located a bit outside of the old town right next to the National Gallery of Slovenia and Museum of Modern Art, so it is impossible to miss if a visitor checks out these two museums.

Upon entering, the interior is beautifully-decorated with all the surfaces painted featuring scenes of the Bible. This results in a wonderful mix of colors that is a veritable feast for the eyes. It is possible to spend quite a bit of time here admiring the wall paintings.
